Adult Quail and Quail Eggs

Quail (Cotunix coturnix) are small, gentile birds that grow very quickly and produce great tasting eggs. They are easy to care for and can make great pets.

These quail mature quickly and may start producing eggs at as early as 7 weeks and can be taken to the butcher as early as 8 weeks. Quail eggs are small but are packed with nutrients that have been linked to many health benefits. They have a higher yolk-to-white ratio than chicken eggs.

Easy to Care For

These quail are a great alternative to chickens as they are easy to care for and simple to raise. Quail are about one third the size of a chicken and therefore require less space to raise compared to chickens or ducks.

Chicks require a heat lamp for three to five weeks until they grow true feathers. Protein enriched food is best and always ensure they have access to clean water and fresh air. Clean their living space on a consistent basis. An insulated area is required for quail and they often require a heat source during the winter months.

Health Benefits

Quail will generally lay between three to four eggs per week and a few quail will be sufficient for personal egg collection. Females require 14 hours of light per day for optimum egg production and therefore providing a source of artificial lighting during the winter months is necessary. Quail eggs are small but are packed with nutrients that have been linked to many health benefits. They have a higher yolk-to-white ratio than chicken eggs.

Quail eggs have been linked to health benefits that include; decreased blood pressure, an increase in metabolism, a reduction in allergy symptoms and a boost in energy levels. Keep eggs refrigerated and wash eggs before consumption.
